The Town Council is made up of 15 Councillors who are elected every four years. The next planned elections will be in 2011.
The Town Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are elected by the Councillors each year, at the Annual Statutory Meeting of the Council held in May. At the same meeting Councillors decide which Committees they will sit on for the coming year and who will be the Council’s Representatives to Outside Bodies.
The Town Council has three main Committees – General Purposes , Environment and Leisure and Plans. There are also two sub-committees – Personnel and Finance. The Plans committee meets every three weeks in order to make representations to Wealden District Council, which is the planning authority. All Town Council and Committee meetings are held in the Council Chamber, on the first floor, in the Civic Centre and are open to the public, who may speak at the discretion of the Chairman of the meeting. Agendas are available to the public prior to the meetings, on notice boards throughout the Town and on the Council’s website.
Councillors are able to claim an allowance of £775 for their duties, in addition to the subsistence allowance that is already available. This allowance is not available to co-opted members. A separate allowance is given to the Mayor so that they can fulfil their Mayoral duties.
