Deputy Mayor: Cllr. Duncan Bennett
It is a great honour to have been re-elected as Deputy Mayor. I thank my colleagues
for their support.
I congratulate our new Mayor, Cllr. John Carvey and offer him my loyal assistance as his deputy. I must thank his predecessor, Cllr. Len Ashby, for his hard work as Mayor in the previous year.
This year, despite being in a financial climate which demands that all publicly funded bodies be prudent with their reserves, we shall be continuing with many important council projects that will benefit our great town. This is achievable due to the increased "earmarking" of funds over the last few years, allocating them for specific projects. We are developing an ongoing plan for such projects, amongst which, an exciting redevelopment of the Victoria Pleasure Ground sticks out as a highlight!
I shall again be assisting the Mayor and our colleagues in the ongoing work of trying to sort out the thorny issue of commuter parking for the railway station. It really is unsatisfactory that the current situation has been unable to be resolved for so very long, but we shall progress this with dogged determination.
I look forward to the new council year and to the challenges that it will undoubtedly bring.
As you will se
e from the variety of services, clubs, groups, societies and events,
Uckfield is a thriving market town which
continues to develop and expand but still retains its great sense of community. It has a good range of shops and a wide range of
restaurants to suit every palate. The town is located in an Area of Outstanding Beauty, contains a variety of open spaces for
sports and recreation and also has a number of nature reserves and woodland for more passive enjoyment.
The town is proud of its heritage but also caters for modern business with the River Uck running through the centre of town passing by the 15th century Bridge Cottage and the 21st century Bellbrook Industrial Estate. Bellbrook continues to be one of the most successful industrial estates in the country and our monthly farmers market continues to win awards and accolades. We are equally proud of our schools, which have excellent reputations and are a credit to the town. The Town Council’s ‘home’ is the Civic Centre, just off the High Street which also houses Luxfords Restaurant and provides rooms for meetings, conferences, concerts, parties, wedding receptions and almost any other event you may want to hold. Many of our local organisations use the Civic Centre and the Town Council works in partnership with many of these groups to help put on the events, festivals, concerts etc. that make the town the place that it is.
