Uckfield Town Council Project with Eco Green Communities – Keeping our green spaces clean

Uckfield Town Council has had a successful partnership with Eco-Green Communities since 2018. The project aims to have a positive impact; keeping our green spaces clean, tackling the issue of dog fouling and generally cleaning up open spaces. Uckfield Town Council are renewing the contract and looking for sponsors to support the renewed venture.

The 26 councils that Eco Green Communities works with have dispensed an impressive 6 million bags. Uckfield has used 37,500 of those bags per year. Assuming that 30 passers-by see the stations for every bag taken, that’s over 1 million views across the 10 Uckfield stations in a year – which is a great opportunity for local businesses wanting to engage directly with the community and make a positive impact.

Eco Green Communities offer Eco dog stations and litter picking stations to councils tackling the littering and dog fouling epidemic, one station at a time. Uckfield Town Council currently has 10 stations in operation at various locations across the town, however, there might be an opportunity to implement more stations in the future, as the project has been a success.

Mr Francis, the Town Council’s Estates & Facilities Manager, commented: Since installing the stations we have received further requests via members of the public, councillors and grounds staff”

The aim of the project was to allow for those moments where owners may have forgotten or simply run out of bags, not having a bag was no longer an excuse. The education of using fully compostable bags was to also encourage behaviour change and reduce the use of single-use plastic.

The project benefits the whole community as it serves to educate and empower the individual to make the right choice. The power is put back in the hands of the community.

Mr Francis, also stated: “The eco stations provide a handy service to dog walkers caught without a bag and remove the excuse of leaving dog mess because of not having a bag to hand. They provide convenience and have become very well used at all of the locations”

Julie Cook, Director of Eco Green Communities, commented: “By erecting these stations, councils are helping to reduce dog fouling which is a perennial problem for many local authorities. Numerous studies show that people are more likely to drop litter in areas where there are already high volumes of rubbish, including dog waste. Where litter levels are low, people are more likely to dispose of all types of waste responsibly. A survey of councils we are working with has shown that where the stations are installed there is an average decrease in dog fouling complaints of 49.4% and a 56.8% decrease in overall litter. This is an extremely positive result”

Opportunity for sponsorship
