Sheep return to West Park Local Nature Reserve

This week sheep will return to the West Park Local Nature Reserve in Uckfield. The sheep will be contained within areas protected by electric fencing. However, local residents and dog walkers will be able to use other areas of the nature reserve as usual and access will be maintained around the electric fencing. Residents are asked to keep their dogs on a leash and children must be supervised when near the temporary sheep pen.

There are significant benefits brought by the grazing sheep including maintaining the natural habitat, grazing out the more dominant plants including bracken and, as a consequence, encouraging more wild flowers.

Neal, the Town Council’s Ranger, said: “Without the sheep grazing the area each year we would face a much bigger challenge to keep the West Park Local Nature Reserve in good condition for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.”
