Uckfield High Street Post Office Update – 01.09.2026
With the Uckfield High Street Post Office scheduled to close on Wednesday 9th September 2026 (last operating day Tuesday 8th September), Uckfield Town Council has been seeking urgent answers from the Post Office on the future of its services in the town centre.
On Friday 28th August, we received correspondence from a Post Office representative, who confirmed several important pieces of information.
Firstly, they confirmed that due to TG Jones tendering its resignation of the Post Office branch, when the store closes on 9th September, the Post Office there will also be forced to close.
Secondly, they confirmed that the Post Office is “in the process of identifying a replacement operator to run the service”.
They also stated that the opportunity was initially advertised publicly, but due to receiving “several expressions of interest, the advert for Uckfield has now been removed”. They added that they are currently “working through this interest from potential new operators”.
The representative concluded by stating that at this time, the Post Office did not have any further information to share.
They clarified that as soon as they have further updates, they will reach out to local stakeholders such as the Town Council so they can be shared with the community.
Clarification on the Uckfield Banking Hub
Following comments we are aware of on social media, Uckfield Town Council would also like to clarify the difference between a new Post Office operator and the Uckfield Banking Hub, which opened on 26th August 2026.
The timing of the Banking Hub’s opening and the use of Post Office branding on the building’s new frontage has understandably led to confusion about the services that the Banking Hub will provide.
The Uckfield Banking Hub is an addition to the national list of Banking Hub branches – the first of which opened in April 2021.
Banking Hubs are owned by Cash Access UK, who are funded by the UK’s biggest banks, including AIB NI, Bank of Ireland UK, Barclays, Danske Bank, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest Group, Santander, TSB and Virgin Money. They are a response to downward trends in in-person customer interactions and the dwindling number of high street branches of banks and building societies, pooling resources in one location to still provide key services.
Banking Hubs are operated by the Post Office, but they do not offer Post Office services.
The official Post Office website states about Banking Hubs: “While they’re operated by Post Office, Banking Hubs aren’t regular Post Office branches.”
“This means services like posting letters and parcels, insurance products, travel money as well as identity services like passports, aren’t available in our hubs.”
More information about the Uckfield Banking Hub is available here: https://www.cashaccess.co.uk/hubs/uckfield-east-sussex/
The nature of services provided at the Uckfield Banking Hub, and the Post Office’s national policy on their use, therefore means that the Post Office is seeking a new operator for Post Office services only.
Alternative Post Office services nearby
We are frustrated that a break in Post Office services will take place in Uckfield town centre while a new operator is identified.
We are particularly concerned about the impact this will have on residents with additional needs, including our older and disabled populations.
The Post Office has advised that, where possible, they recommend residents should use its two closest branches at Ridgewood and Five Ash Down.
The latest information on available services can be found through the Post Office branch finder: https://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder
